Yamaha Jog 1 - ヤマハ ペリカンジョグ

Chassis Code: 27V (Pelican Jog)

The 27V Jog was Yamaha’s entry that pushed their scooters into the spotlight. The heavy marketing around its lightweight design was true, at only 49 kg with about 4.5 horsepower, it’s nimble, fun, and handles incredibly well. It’s often called the Pelican Jog thanks to its beak-like front panel, which gives it a distinct and recognizable look.

Common Modifications

While the stock 10-inch wheels with the thin spokes look unique, a lot of riders feel they look a bit oversized for such a small bike. Many swap to Yamaha Mint 8-inch wheels, which give the Jog a more balanced look. If you’re sticking with 10s and have money to spend, Yamaha Active wheels are the grail option. People mix and match on jogs to, it’s not uncommon to see an 8-inch Mint front paired with a 10-inch Jog rear.
Since the 27V is basically the “Honda Tact” of Yamaha, cowl options are everywhere. You’ll usually find five to eight wings and cowls listed on auctions at any given time, plus the occasional vintage cowl and wing set. And while headlight cowls are popular on most scooters, they’re surprisingly rare across all three Jog generations, which gives the 27V a cleaner, more original look when left uncovered.

  • Mint 8-Inch Wheel

    Mint 8-Inch Wheel

Swap the stock 10-inch Jog wheels for Yamaha Mint 8-inch wheels. They balance the proportions better and are the most common wheel change for the 27V.
  • Yamaha Active Wheels

If you want to keep 10-inch wheels but upgrade the style, Yamaha Active wheels are the top-tier, “grail” option for the 27V.
  • Custom bodywork

    Custom bodywork

Cut vents into the bodywork and cutouts into the fender and under the seat for a unique, stylized look. This is way harder than it looks.
  • Shaved seat

Shave the seat for a more aggressive, shape that enhances the overall shape of your tact.
  • Tail cowl

    Tail cowl

Remove rear rack and fit a tail cowl (wing), often paired with undercowl and headlight cowl.
  • Angled Bars

With the Jogs' aerodynamic shape, chopping and welding your handlebars is not unheard of on this base.

Why People Choose This Base

The 27V Jog has strong cowl and chamber support, making it easy to style your own way. It’s also more reliable than chain-driven Yamahas like the Mint, so you spend more time riding and less time fixing. Visually, the Pelican nose and slim body give it a clean, sharp look that works with almost any setup.

The Downsides

Panel tabs on older 27V plastics can be fragile, and replacements usually cost more than parts for most scooters on this list. There are remanufactured panels from China floating around on auction sites, but I’d recommend spending the extra money and finding OEM Yamaha panels since the aftermarket ones often have fitment issues. Beyond that, there aren’t many downsides. It’s a well-rounded base that avoids most of the common problems.

So Why Should You Buy One???

The Jog is a true Swiss-army-knife scooter. Its light, nimble feel makes you forget it’s only a 50cc, and its sporty nature gives you plenty of tuning potential and fun riding. Visually, it fits the era perfectly and can be built in almost any direction. Racing-style liveries with widened wheels, slammed setups with vents, chopped and welded bars, crazy period-correct paint, or a simple two-tone with a chamber and cowl, this base fits all. The only real downside is that it’s too good. Demand is high, which pushes up prices for both the base and OEM/aftermarket parts, especially with so many great builds already out there.
